DIG THIS APRIL 2023

Saturday 1st April 2023

Spring is here - hurray!
The clocks have sprung forward, and at this time of the year our thoughts are on the work that needs to be done to get the estate communal areas ready for all who live here, to enjoy in the summer months. With that in mind the future care of the estate's communal areas has been under discussion now for some time. Those of us who live here do, we think, appreciate all the greenery of our surroundings we are able to experience throughout the year. The new gardening contractors, Priestgate, are working closely with us to find the best way forward to improve some of the areas that we know are in need of urgent attention.

There is always the vital issue of limited available finance which governs what we can and cannot achieve, and so we are creating a long-term plan taking into consideration the major areas in need of rejuvenation. The work will have to be selective at this stage but will be spread as equally as possible around the estate. Unfortunately, in some areas this does involve severe pruning, which is necessary to encourage the rejuvenation, and this is going to make some areas look rather patchy and forlorn. We suspect that as in all gardening we will have to be patient as the recovery begins, but we intend to keep you all informed of plans and progress as much as possible.

Bamboo
We are anticipating the grinding of the rhizomes will be carried out in mid-April. We will ensure you are notified of the actual date as soon as we know.

Future of our trees
All the trees on the estate will be considered for pruning this autumn to a height that enables the gardening contractors to reach any new growth in the future. You will be kept informed as this will involve the use of cherry pickers.

Friends of The Old Meadow (FoTOM)
To revive this groups' activities, you are all invited to attend a meeting in the north garden on Sunday 30th April at 10.30am. This will give you an opportunity to find out where we need your help, and a chat afterwards at the Peach Tree with an invitation to imbibe a beverage of your choice!
