Latest news on Abbey Gardens

Work in Abbey Gardens, which includes cutting back the trees, was originally scheduled for September but Shrewsbury Town Council has advised that this work has now been moved to the October half term.

Hello fellow resident,

It has been a quiet month with regard to topics for the newsfeeds so I decided to share a photo of this handsome chap with you.

He is a resident of Amber Rise. You may have seen him around. He answers to the name of Smokey.

On speaking with Gerry (a member of our board) she told me the following story.

Living on the wild side: A couple of residents reported seeing a fox being chased by a large ginger cat at the north end of the estate behind the Network Rail fencing. They heard a lot of snarling and growling in the bushes on the bank. Suddenly out shot a fox with his very recognisable bushy tail and streaking behind it was a large ginger cat in hot pursuit. They said it was literally 10 yards in front of them and they almost couldn't believe what they were seeing. The cat then appeared in front of them looking as shocked as they were and not sure what to do next. It couldn't be coaxed to come and say "hello" but slunk off into the bushes with its tail down.
It didn't appear to have suffered but if anyone on the estate owns a ginger cat they might want to check it over to make sure it wasn't wounded in any way. Foxes were sighted earlier in the year on the embankment of the railway - a common environment for them.
Also seen are families of blue tits feeding off insects in the crevices of our brick-built homes. So here we are in our very urban setting surrounded by wildlife - some we see, some we rarely see and some we don't see - but it's there.
For interest, September is considered the first month of autumn and has its own gemstone, which is Sapphire and flower, the Aster. The flower's name comes from an ancient Greek word meaning "star", referring to the shape of the flower head.
